Andrew Freshwater

Founder of TheFarmOS, Director of Clear Creek Pastoral Co and CEO of Moorella Ag Holdings · Byawatha, North East Victoria · MAIAST, CPAg

Andrew Freshwater farms at Clear Creek, Byawatha, in North East Victoria, where he's a seventh-generation livestock producer and where he and Angela Murphy breed Angus and Red Angus cattle, the Advancer composite and the Catalyst shedding sheep, and he's also CEO of Moorella Ag Holdings Pty Ltd, a business running cattle and sheep on properties across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

Breeding stock and building the means to measure and select them has been his work since he was a teenager, when he'd already exported sheep genetics to nine countries by nineteen and had sent live rams to southern South America while he was still in Year 12, and in the years since he's imported the Leachman Stabilizer cattle into Australia, helped establish a cattle breeding system on the Kazakh steppe, built a sheep genetics supply chain and recording system for Sweden's largest food company and worked with an overseas government and university group on a tropically adapted cattle composite.

As well as being a director of Clear Creek Pastoral Co, he holds MAIAST and CPAg accreditation and puts out the Clear Creek Newsletter, and the software behind Genemap, TheFarmOS, PaddockOS and the Clear Creek tools is his own work, written because he wanted commercial producers to have proper evaluation and management systems centred on the things that pay, which in livestock comes down to fertility, body condition, structure, docility and adaptation to the country they're run on.

Where breeding's concerned, he's convinced the future for sheep and cattle alike is in climatically adapted composites that are properly measured in commercial conditions, so he's taken the phenotypes in his own dataset himself, on his own animals, and written the evaluation software that analyses them.

Why he built TheFarmOS

TheFarmOS is the business side of the same thinking, and he built it because he wanted to see where the money actually goes on a mixed farm, enterprise by enterprise and month by month, without paying someone to rebuild a spreadsheet every year. It takes the MYOB or Xero export a farm already keeps and turns it into a forward cashflow plan in which each enterprise is its own profit centre, so you can see which one's making money and which one's being carried by the others, the month the bank balance is going to get tight, and how the budget's tracking against actuals as the year goes on, with an advisor that reads your own plan and your district's season before it offers a view you can take to your accountant.
